How to Split a PDF Online Free

Extract specific pages or divide a PDF into multiple files — directly in your browser, no uploads and no signup required.

Try the PDF Splitter

When do you need to split a PDF?

Large PDFs are often unwieldy — too big to email, hard to navigate, and containing more content than the recipient needs. Splitting lets you extract the exact pages you want to share: a single chapter from a report, specific pages from a contract, or one exhibit from a legal document.

PDF splitting is also useful for reordering pages (split into individual pages, then merge in new order), removing unwanted pages (split around them), and archiving different sections of a document separately.

Step-by-step: split a PDF in seconds

1

Open the PDF Splitter

Visit the free PDF Splitter tool. It uses pdf-lib and runs entirely in your browser — no uploads, no account, no file size limits.

2

Upload your PDF

Drag and drop your PDF onto the uploader. A thumbnail preview of all pages is generated so you can see exactly what you're working with.

3

Choose how to split

Select a splitting method: extract a specific range (e.g. pages 3–7), split every N pages, extract individual pages, or split at specific page numbers.

4

Download the split files

Click Split PDF. Each output file downloads separately, or download all as a ZIP. Pages, bookmarks, and formatting are preserved.

Pro tips for splitting PDFs

Use page ranges for chapter extraction

If your PDF has a table of contents, note the page ranges for each chapter and extract them as separate PDFs — perfect for sharing individual sections.

Split large reports before emailing

Email size limits (usually 10–25MB) can block large PDF attachments. Split the document into smaller sections and send separately.

Extract just the cover page for previews

Extract page 1 only to create a cover page preview. Then use PDF to Images to convert it to a thumbnail for websites or social media.

Combine with PDF Merger for reordering

Split a PDF into individual pages, then use PDF Merger to recombine them in a different order. This is the easiest way to reorder PDF pages without any software.

Your PDF never leaves your device

The PDF Splitter uses pdf-lib running entirely in your browser. Legal documents, financial records, medical files, and contracts are never uploaded to any server. Your documents are completely private.

Frequently asked questions

Can I extract just one page from a PDF?

Yes — select 'Extract pages' mode and enter a single page number. The tool creates a new PDF containing only that page.

Does splitting a PDF affect quality?

No — splitting only changes which pages are included in each output file. Text, images, and formatting are preserved exactly as in the original.

Can I split a password-protected PDF?

Not directly. First remove the password using the PDF Password tool, then split the unlocked PDF.

What happens to bookmarks and links when I split?

Internal bookmarks and links that reference pages within the extracted range are preserved. Links to pages outside the extracted range will no longer resolve correctly.

Is there a page limit for splitting?

No — the tool handles PDFs with any number of pages. Very large PDFs (500+ pages) may take a moment to load the preview thumbnails.
