How to Count Characters Online Free

Count characters with and without spaces, words, sentences, and estimated reading time — instantly in your browser with no signup.

Try the Character Counter

Why count characters?

Almost every publishing platform has character or word limits — and most enforce them silently by truncating your text. Google truncates meta descriptions at ~160 characters. Twitter cuts tweets at 280. Instagram limits captions to 2,200 characters. LinkedIn shows only 210 characters before hiding the rest. Academic essays have word counts. App store descriptions have character limits.

A character counter lets you write and refine within these limits before publishing, saving you from truncated search snippets, rejected submissions, and content that gets hidden behind a "see more" button right at the key message.

Step-by-step: count characters instantly

1

Open the Word Counter tool

Visit the free Word Counter & Character Counter. It updates in real-time as you type — no buttons to press, no page reloads.

2

Paste or type your text

Paste your content directly into the text area. Supports any length of text — from a tweet to a full novel. Works entirely in your browser.

3

Read the character count

The dashboard instantly shows characters with spaces, characters without spaces, words, sentences, paragraphs, and estimated reading time.

4

Check platform-specific limits

Use the platform comparison section to see exactly how your text fits against Twitter (280), Instagram captions (2,200), Meta descriptions (160), and other limits.

Character limits by platform

Meta descriptions: aim for 150–160 characters

Google displays up to ~160 characters in search snippets. Going over means truncation with an ellipsis — keep your key message in the first 155 characters.

Twitter: 280 characters including spaces

Twitter counts all characters including spaces, punctuation, and emojis. URLs are always counted as 23 characters regardless of actual length.

LinkedIn posts: 3,000 characters for max reach

LinkedIn shows 210 characters before the 'See more' cutoff. Put your most important content first. Full posts max out at 3,000 characters.

Academic work: words vs. characters

Most academic word limits count words, not characters. Some platforms (like Twitter) count characters. Know which limit applies before you start writing.

Your text is never stored or sent anywhere

All counting runs in your browser with JavaScript. No text is transmitted, stored, or logged. Safe for confidential copy, client work, exam answers, and any private content.

Frequently asked questions

Does character count include spaces?

By default, 'character count' typically includes spaces. Our tool shows both: characters with spaces and characters without spaces, so you can use whichever metric you need.

Do emojis count as one character?

It depends on the platform. Most modern systems count each emoji as one Unicode character (or sometimes two, for complex emojis). Twitter counts emoji as 2 characters. Our tool counts each emoji as the number of Unicode code points it uses.

What is the character limit for a Google meta description?

Google displays approximately 155–160 characters for desktop snippets and around 120 characters for mobile. Keep meta descriptions under 155 characters to avoid truncation.

How many characters is 500 words?

In English, a rough estimate is 2,500–3,000 characters (including spaces) per 500 words, as the average English word is 4.7 characters plus a space. The exact count varies significantly by content.

Is my text stored anywhere?

No — the character counter runs entirely in your browser. Your text is never sent to any server, stored in a database, or logged in any way. Paste confidential text without concern.
